Then I'd have a couple of weeks of tonsilitis and also 'flu. My chest has always been weak. But I think it was people smoking in my case - my parents both smoked (the docs told them to give up after one of my chest x-rays as I had a patch on my lung) and my aunt and uncle used to come and smoke 60 a day each! The room was like a fog!

There were just 2 kids in our family too and my next door neighbour's. But lots of the kids at school were in families with 'football teams' - 11 of 'em!Carolhttp://www.mountaincowardadventures.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6429013260986201371.post-31049428104448533972022-07-31T00:28:54.180+01:002022-07-31T00:28:54.180+01:00It was a great time to be that age Anabel as we ha...It was a great time to be that age Anabel as we had a great deal of freedom. Can't imagine parents now allowing children to wander miles from home unsupervised although we nearly always went in a group then. It was mainly boys however as most sensible girls were reluctant to go outside the estate into wilder areas. It's also still... Pollok, Barrhead, Neilston, Paisley etc, one of the best and most interesting/varied rural landscapes in all of Scotland... as someone who has explored it all to compare the different areas. Not nostalgia just an observation that nowhere else has that rolling carpet of drumlins, woods, streams, dams, small villages, hidden hollows, and natural features. Won the lottery growing up there. blueskyscotlandhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09373718369702364265noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6429013260986201371.post-24502254777092199592022-07-31T00:12:14.139+01:002022-07-31T00:12:14.139+01:00Hi Carol, I was just assuming it may have been the...Hi Carol, I was just assuming it may have been the small black cattle that you still get in some parts of Scotland or Highland cattle. Yes, my mum was always complaining about the damp in my bedroom as I got repeated bouts of bronchitis through it, or at least that was the suspected cause. As she pestered the housing officer for several years to come up with a solution to the dampness problem and persistent seasonal mould every winter, along with many other tenants no doubt, he probably wished she would stop breathing :o) I was told he did say that, probably flippantly... along with "try having less kids" not applicable in our case with just two. This was an era when you could say things like that half jokingly and expect to get away with it, along with chucking heavy wooden dusters at pupils heads in school if they were talking or not paying enough attention in class. Did see that happen a few times. It did keep you on your toes and alert.blueskyscotlandhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09373718369702364265noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6429013260986201371.post-84986080086636189002022-07-30T23:00:12.189+01:002022-07-30T23:00:12.189+01:00Interesting and happy memories.Interesting and happy memories.Anabel Marshhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15643196773717977697noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6429013260986201371.post-70933350536260184492022-07-30T20:59:40.508+01:002022-07-30T20:59:40.508+01:00I used to have water voles in my field but they...I used to have water voles in my field but they're long gone now :-( Was the bumble bee okay? I was wondering why it was upside down?

There would have been some black and white cows back then I think but they would have been British Fresians rather than the modern 'Holstein Fresians' which are pretty much Canadian breeding I think and much, much bigger. Brtish Fresians are small and neat but you don't see any nowadays as they're not as 'productive'. There would also have been those with the long downward curving horns - we had those until recently around here but the farmer died and the wife didn't want to carry on so now they're gone :-(

I liked your summing up of our 60s childhoods and this comment just killed me:
" the housing office usually blamed the tenants for breathing too much "

Did you make that up or did they really say that?Carolhttp://www.mountaincowardadventures.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.com
