Different Aspects of Glasgow. Last Part. Merry Christmas. Mural Wall.

                                                ALL PHOTOS CLICK FULL SCREEN

For the last part of my Glasgow tour it's City Centre time. The first time I've arrived by train in Argyle Street. Normally I come in by bus or get off at Anderston Train Station or Central Station but I wanted to see the new hotel just off Argyle Street and this station is nearest.

I thought this was some sort of open to the general public student hub at first but it's a hotel... and a student/ business/ co working hub. A European chain but the first of its kind in Scotland and the UK apparently. Owned by a Scottish entrepreneur who grew up in Edinburgh before making his name abroad. Gets good reviews. Faces onto the Merchant City district very close to Citation. 18 social hub hotels spread across European cities so far with its HQ in Amsterdam.

On one side it looks out onto Argyle Street....

This is another part of the new build here...

And this side faces Citation, the old Glasgow courthouse and the Merchant City District with its period architecture, bars and clubs.

Like here on Buchanan Street.

and a mix of styles from Victorian sandstone to modern glass and steel.

The old buildings being full of ornate carvings so it always pays to look up.

The mural wall on Clyde Street beside the River Clyde.

I still think the overall impression of this prime city centre location is very messy with all the graffiti everywhere but the murals are good and ever changing so I'll concentrate on them instead.

Clown mural.

Female in profile.

Shades of True Detective. Season One... perhaps perhaps?

Legal Wall.... ?

Femme.

Older. "Golden Oldie...?" Fair play.  Everyone 50 or over still remembers their wild youth.... now trapped within the failing body of a grumpy old git ... but still there... totally intact :)  And jealous of 18 to 20 somethings  whizzing quickly past without a care... so make the most of it...with sex, drugs, good music, and rock and roll... as you too will be a useless, slow, old git soon enough yourself :)

Old favourite.

Dog. Glasgow lane art.

Girl. Same Renfield Lane location as dog.

Dress Shop Mural at Charing Cross.

Same shop.

Haircut mural.

Charing Cross view.

Park Circus Towers.

Beresford Hotel in 2024.

Glasgow City Chambers side view. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

I haven’t been down to those murals on the Clyde for ages so I don’t recognise any of them. Merry Christmas, Bob!

They change all the time down there so some will already be different. Merry Christmas Anabel.

So what's Citation now? Like the dog mural and laughed at the haircut one. Also some of the women ones are very good. But what's the big 'E' on the second dress shop one?

Hope you have a great Christmas and Hogmanay!

Built 1840s and previously a B listed Glasgow Sheriff Court it's now available for upmarket weddings and event hire. I've never been in any Glasgow hotels or posh places so no idea what its like inside. It might be LOVE but there was a large car parked right in front of that mural as they were digging up the road outside so I didn't see that middle section of it and was watching I didn't fall down any nearby holes. Hell of a lot of roads getting dug up in Glasgow City Centre at the moment, Either for tech cabling or more likely cycle tracks as bikes, mainly food bikes, have tripled in numbers in the city centre. Might be 'green friendly' but crap for older pedestrians and blind/partially sighted folk. It's either bikes or homeless folk sprawled semi conscious on the pavements that's the main hazards now in city centres I've found. Merry Festive Season to you as well :o)

They're digging all our roads up too... but we're really glad about it - they're tackling the masses of potholes and degrading edging at last!

Hi Carol, Have you seen the You Tube Video 'Freezing This Christmas' about the current government yet. Banned by the BBC but still the unofficial number one Xmas song.

Carol said...

Yes I did - I read about it. I was reading Richard's Daily Mail and it said they mentioned it on the chart programme on the BBC, didn't play it and then moved straight onto the next one in the chart - disgusting. Time they were got rid of.

It's worth seeing on You Tube, very well put together. Also worth watching is 'Wallace and Gromit. Vengeance most Fowl.' Not only very funny but a love letter tribute to all things Yorkshire. Easily the best thing on TV at Christmas, along with 'Tiddler.' ( that's more of a kid's thing though both have stunning art work in them.

I watch a lot of kid's DVDs (and read a lot of kid's books, e..g Famous 5) - I'm currently watching Skippy the Bush Kangaroo - love it!

Also amazing that both Liza Goddard and Taggart's Mark mcManus got their intro into UK TV by being in Skippy the Bush Kangaroo first. Weirdly, when I was over in Australia to visit my sister years ago they had a similar type of programme in German called Inspector Rex, about an Alsatian dog that solves crimes. Luckily the dog was silent throughout using facial expressions, barking, and paw gestures only as a dog speaking fluent German might have stretched credibility a bit.

blueskyscotland said...

Wow! Just looked up Inspector Rex online and It was highly popular in some countries and ran for 10 seasons. Beat that Skippy....:o)

I'd say kangaroos are a lot more fun to watch than alsatians so I vote that Skippy wins! Every time I see those leaping, bounding creatures with swivelling ears, I laugh!

blueskyscotland said...

The adoring dog loving public might disagree Carol... Inspector Rex 10 Seasons = Skippy 3 seasons. Maybe Rex could do sign language and mime charades as well. And if you've ever met a big roo mob in the outback swiveling its head in your direction they are not cute at all. Furry Terminators that can jump 20 feet in one bounce and feet like cricket bats landing. Same with the male Emu... massive powerful birds close up. Skippy was a midget.

Being interested in Skippy and the series, I had a good google of kangaroos to see how trainable they are, how tamable they are etc. - answer was not at all! And apparently they're far more dangerous if they're tamed and live with you as, then, they see you as a fellow kangaroo and, if they feel like it, beat you up - with very dire and often fatal consequences. Whereas, in the wild, if you don't approach them, you should be fine. But I've seen photos of the big Red Kangas and read their dimensions and speed/height they can jump etc. - pretty scary things really!

Carol said...

oh, and Skippy goes to at least season 4 as that's the one I bought to see if I liked the programme before deciding I loved it and bought the whole lot plus the film

Four Seasons and a film for Skippy Carol... that's very impressive. But wait.... I got it wrong. Inspector Rex was brought back due to public demand and a new network/country and went on-wards for a grand total of 18 seasons, ....plus 7 spin off seasons,.... and was voted world's most famous cadaver dog of all time for his superior nose work on and around dead bodies.... and was on the front cover of International Paw Prints monthly a record 12 times. Woof Woof.
